I Googled a little and it turns out, sake lees extract is a type of deposit left over from the production of Japanese sake. But if you look at the ingredients list (bolded in the ingredients list), there’s sake lees extract and my theory is that the strong smell is caused by this ingredient (since sake is a type of Japanese alcohol).
